A viral social media claim alleging that Nigerian singer Bella Shmurda was swindled out of $4 million in a real estate transaction has been found to be false.
The claim, which began circulating online on Tuesday, was accompanied by a video of the singer during an Instagram Live session. Users sharing the clip alleged that he was in tears after discovering that a Lagos property he reportedly bought for $4 million had been fraudulently sold to him.
The post claimed:
“Bella Shmurda live IG tonight. And he completely broke down in tears. After spending 4 million dollars on a house in, Lagos. Only to discover… the house wasn’t even owned by the seller. This was what he said.”
It also quoted the singer as saying:
“Nigeria. I need your help. I’m not doing okay right now. I spent $4m. of my own hard-earned money.
“Only to find out I bought a stolen property. And now the seller has disappeared.”
The allegation quickly spread across social media, with many users believing the incident had just occurred.
However, a person close to the artiste clarified that the claim is misleading, explaining that the video being circulated is an old recording from 2023.
According to the source, the footage was taken during an Instagram Live session Bella Shmurda held after the death of fellow singer Mohbad and has no connection to any property transaction.
“It’s fake news. We do not know where the agenda came from. That video is from 2023,” the source said.
The source did not indicate whether the singer intends to pursue legal action against those responsible for spreading the false story.
Bella Shmurda has yet to publicly react to the viral claim.
Born Akinyibi Ahmed, the singer gained national attention with his hit songs Vision 2020 and Cash App, and has since released the albums Hypertension and Sanity.
