Popular Nigerian musician Fireboy DML has shared details about his path to musical development, including the fact that he previously tried to mimic American pop sensation Beyoncé’s stage persona but was unsuccessful.
Fireboy talked about his experiences in an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone, admitting that he had trouble at first trying to recreate Beyoncé’s stage shows.
Fireboy claimed that despite his best attempts, he was never able to attain the multiple Grammy winner’s level of brilliance.
Thinking back on his adventure, Fireboy revealed his resolve to improve and advance his skill.
He shared how, even while he was creating his most poignant songs, he would imagine himself on stage, channelling his dreams of playing to large crowds into his songwriting process.
Fireboy went on to emphasize the importance of personal growth and development as an artist.
In his words;
“Right from time, even when I used to write my saddest songs, I used to imagine myself playing them in front of millions of people. I always imagine myself on stage when I write my songs.
“So taking that energy from the studio to stage is really a piece of cake for me. What matters to me is making sure that I have fun. When I enjoyed myself, everyone else enjoyed themselves. Step by step, I learned from the greats, I studied; did artist development stuff like vocal training.
“There was a time I tried to copy Beyonce’s routine. But I didn’t last two days.”
Recall that Fireboy DML has reaffirmed that Afrobeats is not his musical genre.
His “roots and identity,” he claimed, are constantly there in his songs.
The “Peru” crooner made an appearance as a guest on the most recent “B And N” episode of the Amazon Music podcast
Fireboy said Nigerian artists need to take advantage of their newfound global recognition and build a structure for their home music industry.
