Afrobeats musician Fireboy DML has discussed the similarities and differences between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Black Stars of Ghana.
He thinks that despite Nigeria’s wealth of individual talent, Ghana is a superior team.
He underlined that although the Super Eagles find it difficult to integrate their individual genius into a cohesive whole, the Black Stars’ strength is in their ability to function as a team.
On the 90s Baby Show podcast, Fireboy explicitly brought attention to the difference in midfield skills by praising Thomas Partey’s outstanding performance against Real Madrid in Arsenal’s Champions League match.
He noted that Nigeria lacks a midfield capable of matching Partey’s skill and influence on the game.
He said, “Right now, Ghana is a better team [than Nigeria’s Super Eagles]. Individually, we [Nigerians] are better. But as a team, Ghana is better.
“For some reason, we have not been able to combine the brilliance of each player to form a solid team. I think it will take time. We have a lot of talents but we have not been able to utilise them.
“Unlike Ghana, we don’t have a good midfield. Thomas Partey alone, we don’t have a midfield to battle that. You saw how Partey handled Real Madrid during their Champions League clash with Arsenal. We don’t have that.”
