Controversial Nigerian media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, also known as Daddy Freeze, recently stated that South African singer Tyla deserved her victory over Nigerian artists at the 66th Grammys.
Reports state that Tyla, the only non-Nigerian contender in the first Best African Music Performance category, won the Grammy on Sunday, beating out the Nigerian quintet of Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Davido, Asake, and Olamide.
A few incensed Nigerian music enthusiasts questioned Tyla’s “Water” above popular songs by their countrymen, charging the Recording Academy with collusion.
Daddy Freeze, however, responded during a recent Instagram live event with supporters, insisting that Tyla’s Grammy victory was richly earned.
He said: “Tyla’s Grammy win over Nigerian artists was not ojoro [scam]. I don’t see the ojoro. I’m struggling to see the ojoro.
“Globally, in my opinion, ‘Water’ was a slightly bigger song [than Nigerian songs nominated]. It doesn’t mean those songs were not big. They were very big. It’s just that ‘Water’ has more vitality. It is massive on Tiktok.”
