The American actor best known for his roles on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, Eric Dane, has died at 53 — nearly a year after revealing his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis.

ALS is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative condition that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, twitching, and gradual atrophy. The disease impairs voluntary movements such as walking, speaking, swallowing, and breathing.

The actor passed away on Thursday evening, surrounded by loved ones, including his daughters “who were the center of his world”.

His family shared that following his diagnosis, he devoted time to supporting advocacy initiatives and research efforts focused on ALS. They described his passing as profoundly painful, thanked the public for their support, and requested privacy as they grieve.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.” a statement from Dane’s family reads.

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight.

“He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Tributes have since poured in, with colleagues expressing their condolences.

In a post via Instagram, his ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ co-star Kim Raver described him as a “light” that “effortlessly shine” both on set and at home.

She reminisced about his playful spirit and sharp comedic timing during filming, noting that his absence would be deeply felt.

“Eric was a light. You’d see it effortlessly shine from him on set of Grey’s as well as when he was with Rebecca and the girls. During filming he’d get this twinkle in his eye and with a mischievous look, he would deliver with perfect comedic timing, a line of dialogue that would floor you. You will be missed,” she wrote.

Kevin McKidd wrote: “Rest in peace, buddy”.

After taking on various television roles in the 1990s and early 2000s, including a recurring appearance in ‘Charmed’, Dane gained widespread recognition in 2006 when he joined ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ during its second season.

He later became a series regular, appearing in more than 130 episodes between 2006 and 2012. His filmography also includes roles in ‘The Last Ship’, ‘Marley & Me’, ‘Valentine’s Day’, and ‘Burlesque’.

Dane is survived by his wife, actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, and their two children.
