Nigerian musician May D, whose real name is Akinmayokun Awodumila, has spoken out about his secret marriage to a Swedish woman and eventual divorce.
The “Soundtrack” crooner disclosed that he became a “house husband” in Sweden after leaving Nigeria, but he was divorced during the COVID-19 lockdown because he was stranded in Nigeria.
May D disclosed that he was remaining at home in Sweden to care for his child during a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast.
The musician revealed that even though he was unemployed, his earnings from performances exceeded those of his working-class spouse. He stated:
“I went to Sweden for a show but decided to settle down there since my girlfriend was Swedish. I was a house husband. What do you want me to do? I should go and work?
“My wife was working but when I go for show, I make five times what she earn in a month. I was a house husband but I was comfortable. I had my baby, my wife can’t be the one taking care of the baby and working at the same time.”
On what led to their divorce, May D said:
“We got divorced during COVID-19 because I got stuck in Nigeria. That was how she divorced me. You know they think different from us.”
In another story, May D spoke about alleged mistreatment while working for P-Square’s label, Square Records.
May D disclosed in a recent Honest Bunch podcast that while he was signed to the company, he was without basic amenities like a comfortable place to live and a bank account.
He claimed that the reason he didn’t have a bank account was because he lacked the funds to start one.
He claimed that after fleeing his house, Davido, a budding artist at the time, sought safety with him.
But he claimed that Davido was taken aback by how dilapidated May D’s room at P-Square’s house was.
“When Davido was running from his dad, he came to my room in P-Square’s house, he was like ‘May-D is this where you stay? I can’t sleep here oh’…If I had a room, it would have been cooler.
“For the four years I was with P-Square, I didn’t have a bank account. That wasn’t their fault. It’s only when someone has money that he opens an account,” he said.
