The Afrobeats musician David Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, has disclosed that his father gave him his stage name.

The singer claimed in an interview with Business Untitled that Adedeji Adeleke was first hesitant to support his musical career.

The celebrated artist claimed that his father began referring to him as “Davido” after hearing his song on the radio.

“I do not think my dad is tough. I blew up when I was 17. Imagine a 17-year-old child and you could not reach him, my dad is the sole parent,” he said.

“Like I told you, I am the first generation entertainer. I don’t think he did not want me to do music, he just want me to be successful.

“So when I moved back to Nigeria, he did not know. Then he heard my voice on the radio, shouting Davido and he gave me that name. My dad gave me Davido….. He just wanted me to go to school which I eventually did.”

In another story, Davido shared his plans for the artists under his record company, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW).

The Afrobeats artist just started a new label called Nine+ Records in collaboration with United Masters, a US distribution business.

According to Davido, the label wants to reach a global audience by branching out beyond Afrobeats.

He also mentioned as his reasons for the collaboration his love of developing new talent and helping budding musicians overcome obstacles in the music business.

“Oh yeah, everything. R&B, trap, etc. I am going to start in Africa but I can see us going all the way,” he said.

In a post via his Twitter page, Davido said that all the artistes signed to DMW will be transferred to the new label.

“All DMW artistes would be moved to Nine+ Records. Clearing the air,” he said.
