Nigerian actor Nonso Diobi has revealed how he obtained his first significant role in Nollywood.
Nonso Diobi claims that a big part of landing the job was his physical similarity to veteran actress Hilda Dokubo.
Nonso Diobi remembered going to an audition when Dokubo saw him and told the director that he should be cast as her sibling because of their similar looks. After a protracted auditioning process, this fortuitous meeting finally resulted in his first film job.
Reflecting on the incident, Nonso Diobi said that he was offered the role without even trying out because Hilda Dokubo saw how similar they looked.
Speaking in a recent episode of the ‘Nollywood Hardcore’ podcast, Nonso Diobi said:
“Back to the story of how I got my first movie role. I was at an audition and I started hearing people calling me from afar. I approached. Before I could get close to them, Hilda Dokubo said, ‘This young boy looks like me. He can play my brother.’
“That was how I finally got my first role after three years and more than 1000 auditions. I didn’t even audition for it.”
