Wizkid, a Nigerian music sensation, has declared independence from the Afrobeats genre.
The musician, famed for his chart-topping tunes and magnetic stage presence, recently came to Instagram to showcase his latest project: the ‘Morayo’ album. However, this is no ordinary album; it is a passionate tribute to his late mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun, who died in August 2023.
Ayo Balogun says that his sixth studio album will be a break from the typical Afrobeats sound.
His international breakout tune, ‘Ojuelegba’, propelled him into the global prominence, but before that, he continuously hooked Wizkid FC with hooks ranging from “Hola at Your Boy” to “Pakurumo” and other smashes.
The ‘Essence’ singer also urged music fans to take him from their playlist if they expect the same type of songs from the sounds that shaped his career.
In a series of frank Instagram postings, Wizkid made it obvious that he is not an Afrobeats musician. The genre that formerly characterised him is no longer appropriate. “Album name: ‘Morayo’—the best I’ve ever made,” he claimed. “Do not call me an Afrobeats artist. “I’m not Afro anything.”
Interestingly, Wizkid is not the only Nigerian musician challenging genre boundaries. Fellow superstar Burna Boy has likewise distanced himself from the Afrobeats moniker, preferring the phrase “Afrofusion.”
Wizkid’s audacious action has prompted heated comments on social media. Social media users have protected Afrobeats while respecting Wizkid’s choice to adapt.
As we await the release of ‘Morayo,’ one thing is certain: Wizkid has had a tremendous music career and continues to have supporters rooting for him as he changes directions in his path.
