The Nigerian singer Flavour N’abania claims he does not consider himself an Afrobeats artist.

Flavour claimed to make “African music” on an Afrobeats Podcast episode, and his contributions are based on a more inclusive portrayal of African sounds.

The artist claimed he does not feel underappreciated for his contribution to Afrobeats’ worldwide popularity.

He went on to say that if attention was paid to African music as a whole rather than just one genre, his contributions to the genre would be acknowledged more.

“I do not feel bad when I am not given credit for the global rise of African music because what the media is talking about is Afrobeats. I am not an Afrobeats artiste,” he said.

“What I am doing is African music. There are guys like Fally Ipupa, Diamond Platinumz who are pushing African music globally that are not Afrobeats artistes.”

He also criticised the media for narrowing the narrative around African music to just Afrobeats and neglecting other genres.

“Most times, the media just talks about Afrobeats. They are not talking about African music. If you talk about African music, of course, you should mention my name,” he added.

In a different story, Flavour N’abania recounted how he was being ordered to step off the stage so that Psquare could perform.

Flavour revealed on the “In My Opinion” podcast that he began his musical career in the church as a drummer and choir conductor.

However, the highlife musician claimed that the Psquare incident marked a turning point in his professional life.

Flavour claimed that his “biggest dream” was to play at parties and bars before he was ordered to leave the stage for the feuding musical pair.

Following the experience, he claimed, he knew he had to change from being “a music man to an artiste.”
