Afrobeats musician Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, better known by her stage name Ayra Starr, has talked candidly about how she approaches dating and the things that have shaped her current state of being single.
Ayra Starr admitted that, at the age of 22, she has very high standards for relationships, which makes it difficult for possible partners to live up to them.
In an interview with Coco Jones for Rolling Stone’s “Musicians on Musicians,” she thanked her for not dating prior to her celebrity.
“I’m so happy I wasn’t really dating before I started music. I didn’t really know what I was missing. So now that I waited this long to date people, I have very high standards. If it’s gonna be hard to meet it, it’s gonna be bye-bye. But also, I don’t have time for myself, talk less of a boy,” she said.
Ayra Starr had earlier revealed that she has never fallen in love.
The Grammy-nominated Afrobeats star spoke about her love life in a recent interview with Dazed Magazine.
Ayra Starr admitted that despite being identified as a “lover girl,” she has never been in a fully committed relationship.
The 21-year-old Mavin Records sensation, also attributed her single status to her intense focus on music since age 15. Ayra Starr said:
“I want to fall in love. I wrote ‘Lagos Love Story’ about what love would look like if I was. I am a lover girl deep in my heart, I’m just very strong headed about it. I actually have never been in love. I have been in certain situations – not situationships! – but I have never been in a fully committed relationship.”
“I’ve put myself out there and I’ve tried to see what’s there but I don’t think I’ve had the time. I’ve been working since I was 15, I was modelling, I was doing university, and now I’m on the road.
“It’s me just enjoying myself as a girl. I’m like, let me sing to a cute boy today and I’m looking around because I can – why not?”
