Music icon Innocent Idibia, widely known as 2Baba, has reacted to the ongoing debate comparing singer Wizkid with late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, describing the conversation as “ridiculous.”
In a clip from an upcoming episode of the Mic On podcast, 2Baba shared his views, saying such comparisons are disrespectful to Fela’s legacy and equally unfair to Wizkid’s body of work.
The debate intensified after Wizkid fired back at criticisms from Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, claiming he is “bigger” than the Afrobeat legend.
2Baba noted that both Fela and Wizkid deserve recognition for their individual contributions to Nigerian music, stressing that they emerged in different eras, operated under different circumstances, and made impact in distinct ways.
According to him, placing the two artistes side by side overlooks the unique contexts in which they created their music and built their influence.
He added that such comparisons are counterproductive and diminish the remarkable achievements of both musicians.
The veteran singer urged fans and critics to appreciate and celebrate the separate legacies of Fela and Wizkid, allowing each artiste to be assessed on their own merit.
“Comparing Fela with Wizkid is ridiculous. Apart from the fact that it is disrespectful to Fela, and at the same time, it is also unfair to Wizkid,” 2Baba said.
