Controversial crossdresser Okuneye Idris, popularly known as Bobrisky, may face detention during the Eid-il-Fitri break.
Bobrisky was apprehended on April 3 and subsequently convicted by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Friday, April 5, 2024, after pleading guilty to charges of currency abuse brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC lodged a six-count indictment against Bobrisky, with the initial four counts related to currency abuse and the remaining two counts concerning alleged money laundering.
Before presenting the charges, the EFCC prosecutor requested the court to dismiss counts five and six.
Bobrisky admitted guilt to the four-count charge of currency abuse. However, he appealed for clemency, asserting his lack of awareness regarding the laws governing currency abuse and expressing his intention to educate his social media followers about it.
“I am a social media influencer with over five million followers. I would do a video on my page, and I would educate people about spraying money. I will not repeat it, My Lord. I regret my actions, My Lord. I am a first-time offender,” he said.
Consequently, Justice Abimbola Awogboro slated April 9, 2024, for Bobrisky’s sentencing and directed that he remain in EFCC custody until then.
However, on Sunday, the Federal Government announced Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10, 2024, as public holidays to observe the Eid-el-Fitr celebration. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made this declaration in a statement issued by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Aishetu Ndayako.
Checks by PUNCH revealed that April 9, the scheduled date for Bobrisky’s sentencing, coincides with the Eid-el-Fitr holiday period. As a result, the court session may not proceed unless Justice Awogboro decides to convene today for the sentencing.
Given this scenario, the controversial crossdresser is likely to spend his holiday in custody.
