The gambler popularly known as Killaboi, Benjamin Best Nnanyereugo, has told a Lagos High Court that he allegedly discovered Instagram messages suggesting his late girlfriend, Augusta Oseodion, was negotiating a sexual encounter with another man for N1.5 million.
Killaboi, who is standing trial over Augusta’s alleged murder, gave the account while testifying in his defence before Justice Ibironke Harrison on Thursday.
He told the court that the discovery left him emotionally distressed and prompted him to confront Augusta during a video call.
According to the defendant, the incident began in late June 2023, after he lost money on a sports bet and became moody.
He said Augusta attempted to comfort him by recalling his previous betting wins and encouraging him, but her efforts failed to improve his mood.
Killaboi said Augusta later returned to school, adding that he had access to her Instagram account and monitored her conversations after she left.
He told the court that he noticed she frequently exchanged messages with accounts belonging to people who were not her friends on the platform and subsequently deleted the conversations.
The defendant said he monitored the account for about a week, during which he saw messages involving invitations to clubs and enquiries about Augusta’s well-being.
He added that he later agreed with Augusta that she could visit Lagos for the weekend. He said he planned to log out of her account before her arrival to prevent her from discovering that he had been monitoring her conversations.
Killaboi said his suspicions were raised after he allegedly saw a message from an account identified as “Yako” a day before Augusta’s planned visit.
According to him, the sender addressed Augusta as “sweetheart”, explained that he had deactivated his Snapchat account and suggested continuing their conversation on Instagram.
He claimed the sender asked when she would visit Lagos, to which Augusta allegedly replied that she could come whenever he wanted.
The conversation, he said, later turned to payment, with Augusta allegedly insisting that she would not reduce her price.
Killaboi told the court that the sender subsequently requested her WhatsApp number to continue the discussion.
He said he decided to investigate further by obtaining a virtual SIM card and creating a WhatsApp account using the name and profile picture associated with “Yako”.
The defendant said he then continued the conversation with Augusta while pretending to be the sender.
According to him, when he asked her to remind him of the amount she wanted, she allegedly quoted N1.5 million. He said he offered N800,000, but Augusta allegedly rejected the amount, explaining that she was taking a significant risk.
Killaboi said he later asked whether their proposed meeting would take place in a hotel or an apartment. He claimed Augusta replied that either option was acceptable, provided he sent the location.
He told the court that he subsequently offered N1 million, which she allegedly rejected, before he agreed to pay the N1.5 million she had requested.
The defendant further claimed that he proposed having sex without a condom, provided they underwent medical tests beforehand, and that Augusta agreed.
He said the exchange eventually convinced him that the discussion concerned a sexual encounter for payment, although he had initially been uncertain about the purpose of the money.
Killaboi said he was shaking and experiencing an emotional breakdown as the conversation unfolded.
He told the court that he considered sending the money through a friend and arranging a hotel meeting where he could confront Augusta, but later abandoned the plan.
According to him, he reasoned that he did not need to spend such an amount to establish that his girlfriend was allegedly cheating on him.
The defendant said he subsequently decided to end the relationship and confront Augusta with the messages he had discovered.
He told the court that he initiated a video call, which Augusta accepted, but she screamed and dropped the phone when she saw him.
Killaboi said he confronted her over the alleged arrangement, told her he knew what she had been doing and declared their relationship over. He added that he threatened to inform Augusta’s mother about the discovery.
The defendant said he had a close relationship with her mother, who had supported their relationship, regularly prayed for him and attended a church he sometimes visited.
He told the court that he initially could not reach her for about 20 minutes but eventually explained the messages he had discovered and informed her that he had ended the relationship.
According to him, Augusta’s mother questioned his decision to access her daughter’s account, telling him that doing so was wrong and constituted a criminal offence.
He said he became upset with her response because he had called to inform her of the breakup rather than discuss how he had accessed the account.
He added that Augusta’s mother indicated she would speak with her daughter, but he reiterated that this was not the reason for his call before ending the conversation.
During the proceedings, Marcel Oru, Killaboi’s lawyer, asked the court to allow Augusta’s mother and brother to leave the courtroom before a proposed video recording was played.
Oru said the request was intended to spare the deceased’s family members further emotional distress, adding that only counsel involved in the case should remain in the courtroom during the playback.
Adebayo Araba, the prosecution counsel, did not oppose the request.
Oru, however, clarified that the recording had not yet been tendered in evidence and that his concern was to prevent additional emotional pain to the deceased’s family.
The court adjourned further hearing until December 7 and 8, 2026.
The Lagos State Police Command declared Killaboi wanted on October 10, 2023, over Augusta’s death, following his confession to the murder of his girlfriend.
Augusta was allegedly murdered on July 13, 2023, at Killaboi’s home in Oral Estate, in the Ajah area of Lagos.
The gambler had said he “mistakenly” stabbed her to death during an argument and never intended to kill Oseodion.
