Popular Nigerian writer Onyeka Nwelue has expressed her sorrow on social media at the passing of late journalist and musician Onyeka Onwenu.

In an article on X, the writer described their chats prior to his injury, which rendered him wheelchair-bound for three months.

As the compere of his thirty-first birthday celebration, Onyeka Nwelue revealed that Onyeka Onwenu had cautioned him not to eat anything at the birthday venue because a terrible event was about to happen.

Asides having the same name, they were also both born on January 31. Onyeka Nwelue wrote on X:

“At my 30th birthday, she said to me: ‘Make sure you don’t eat anything here. Something bad is about to happen.’

On the next day, a Tundra rammed into my car and I was confined to a wheelchair for 3 months.”

She was always excited whenever I was visiting her. She knew I had gifts and gossip for her. Excitedly, she will get intothe kitchen and dash out barefoot. Strong-willed, Onyeka Onwenu was modest and humble in my view. She treated me with love and dignity.

Onyeka Onwenu said to me: “Never you ever throw a pity party.”

For the past weeks, I have perceived the feral scent of death.

Onyeka Onwenu was the compere at my 30th birthday. We were both born on January 31st. She left her party in Lagos to fly to Abuja to celebrate with me…”
