Nigerian singer Ruger has reacted sarcastically to a TikTok user who wished him dead, alleging that his recent music and social media content had negatively affected her mental health.

The controversy started after the unidentified TikTok user shared a video criticising one of Ruger’s songs, which she described as “misogynistic and homophobic.”

She also took issue with a post she claimed the singer wrote which read: “POV: You are the Afrobeats artist to make a song for the lesbian community. I love them”.

In the video, she said she had previously blocked the singer on social media but unblocked him after a friend showed her his content.

Concluding her remarks, she stated: “Ruger gats die na the only thing wey fit help my mental health,” a phrase in Nigerian Pidgin meaning that Ruger’s death is the only thing that would help her mental well-being.

Ruger, born Michael Adebayo, shared the footage on his X page and responded by dismissing her wish.

The singer instead turned the focus to her physical appearance and eating habits.

“I think I get a pass for her wishing me dead,” he wrote.

“So, apologies to the feminists and body positivity activists, but this girl is worried about the wrong thing. She should be worried about her high intake of okpa. She’s on the verge of getting a triple chin.”
