Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti talks candidly about his early life and his relationship with his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Despite his brothers’ possible disagreements, Seun Kuti admitted in a recent episode of the Zero Conditions podcast that he was given special care by his father, whom he referred to as an outstanding parent.
Seun revealed that he has never had to do laundry in his life because of his lavish upbringing. His affluent upbringing was a result of “winning the daddy lottery,” according to him.
He said:
“I won the daddy lottery. Fela Kuti is my favourite person in the world. If you asked my brothers they could say he’s a terrible dad but to me, he was an amazing father,” he said.
“You don’t know how spoilt I was growing up. Till now, I have never done laundry in my life. I don’t know how to wash anything. I’m not bragging.”
Seun also discussed his musical journey, revealing that he joined his father’s band, Egypt 80, at the age of 8.
“I have been with Fela’s Egypt 80 band since I was 8 years old. So when Fela died my family asked me to continue with the band & keep all the money I make,” he said.
