R&B star, Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, has opened up about the challenges she faced at the start of her career, revealing that she was once booed off stage during a performance at a school event.
Speaking during an interview with Big Boy TV, the “Crazy Tings” singer revealed that she was not only booed, but also pelted with plastic bottles.
“I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an up-and-coming singer and I thought I was going to receiving a standing ovation.
“But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me,” she recalled.
Tems explained that despite the embarrassing experience and several other rejections, she stayed determined to build a career in music.
She noted that some of the early setbacks may have been because she chose to remain original, rather than perform covers or follow familiar sounds like many of her peers at the time.
The Grammy-winning singer added that, in hindsight, she is grateful she did not compromise her unique style, even with the pressure she faced in the beginning.
