Nollywood actress and mother of singer Mayorkun, Toyin Adewale, has shared how her son first came into contact with Davido and how the relationship eventually led to his rise in the music industry.

The ‘Holy Father’ hitmaker gained attention after his cover of Davido’s ‘The Money’, a performance that later earned him a deal with Davido’s record label, DMW, where he remained from 2016 to 2021.

Davido reportedly reached out to Mayorkun on social media, inviting him over after discovering the viral cover, which marked the beginning of their professional relationship.

Speaking in an interview with Talk To B, Adewale said she and her son initially suspected that the message was from a scammer pretending to be Davido when it first landed in Mayorkun’s inbox.

She explained that Davido later called, commended the cover, met them in person, and gave Mayorkun money and other gifts, which strengthened their connection.

According to her, Mayorkun went on to record ‘Eleko’ with Davido and eventually lived with him. She also described Davido as “very pleasant and respectful” during her visit to where her son was staying.

“After the cover he did went viral, he was with his brother when Davido sent a message, but we thought it was a scammer. Davido later said he would call. I was there when Davido called him, and he was so excited he almost went crazy,” she said.

“When he called, Davido told him he liked the cover. He also said he was not in town but would return the following week, and that Mayorkun should send his measurements. When Davido returned, Mayowa and his brother went to meet him, and he gave them a full box of gifts and money. At the time, I was scared because I did not know who Davido was.

“The next day, they went back, and that was when they recorded ‘Eleko’. It was easy for Mayorkun because he had always loved writing poems and was in the choir. After the recording, he and his brother moved in with Davido.

“After some time, I went to see where they were staying, and when I got there, Davido was very pleasant and respectful.”

Mayorkun left DMW in 2021 and later released his second album ‘Back In Office in October’ under the Sony Music West Africa division.
