Why Davido may never win Grammy – Geh Geh

Nigerian social media analyst and self-described financial advisor, Geh Geh has generated internet debates by claiming that Afrobeats artist Davido might never receive a Grammy Award.

Geh Geh asserted in a recent Instagram video that the Grammy Awards put marketing ahead of real appreciation, implying that outstanding performers like Davido are not honoured but are merely promoted.

His comments came after Davido and other well-known Nigerian musicians were not awarded at the 67th Grammy Awards.

Geh Geh claims that whereas artists who publicly want the Grammys frequently get repeatedly passed over, those who are unconcerned by the prize tend to win.

He argued that Davido and Wizkid’s nominations serve to attract Nigerian and African audiences to the prestigious event.

If you check the history of the Grammy, na people wey no really care about the award dey win. Once they know you are really obsessed with it, you go cry tire, you no go see am, he said.

He further referenced international acts like Drake, who stopped submitting his songs for Grammy consideration, and questioned why American R&B star Chris Brown was placed in the Afrobeat category.

Geh Geh suggested that such moves are strategic efforts by the Grammy organizers to appeal to the African market.

Grammy is using Davido to market the award to Nigerians and Africans. They know Davido and Wizkid are a big force in the music industry, and their nominations make Nigerians anticipate the event. Why do you think Drake stopped submitting his songs? Why would they put Chris Brown in the Afrobeat category? To market the award to Africans,” he added.

Additionally, he pointed to rapper Nicki Minaj’s history with the Grammys, alleging that she, too, has been used to drive attention to the awards without ever securing a win.
