Award-wining actor Chimezie Imo has talked openly about his feelings towards his film Breath of Life, saying that it still makes him cry every time he sees it.
This follows Elijah’s incredible performance, which won him the 2024 African Movie Viewers’ Choice Award.
Chimezie Imo revealed in a recent interview with Punch that the film’s goal was to tell a story rather than elicit tears. He does concede, though, that the movie has had a significant influence on viewers and stirred up powerful feelings.
He thinks that fans have connected deeply with him because of the sincerity and vulnerability he gave to the character of Elijah.
“Whenever I watch the movie, I still cry. We were just trying to tell a story; there was no attempt to make people cry. But, people watched it, and they felt what the character felt. I tried my best to be Elijah (the character) and transmit every emotion that he felt. I tried to understand his journey, why he is how he is, and I tried to portray him in the most honest way I possibly could. And, that moved people to tears. I guess I did a decent job” he said
Chimezie attributes the movie’s success to his dedication to portraying Elijah’s journey honestly and transmitting his emotions authentically.
He expresses gratitude for the recognition and support he has received, including his win at the AMVCA.
Regarding his AMVCA Award, Chimezie says,
“I have won other awards from film festivals, but I think it is safe to say this is a major one. The feeling has been great. I have always been grateful for every nomination and every win; and for this one, I am thankful for being recognised. I am grateful to the AMVCA team, and everyone who has always supported, criticised, and watched my films”
