Music executive and CEO of Mavin Records, Michael Collins Ajereh, professionally known as Don Jazzy disclosed that he doesn’t allow his artistes to release songs or projects on the same day as Wizkid or Asake.
Jazzy stated that releasing songs on the same day as the pair can constitute musical suicide in a podcast conversation with Fisayo Fosudo.
It goes without saying that Asake and Wizkid are two of Nigeria’s most successful musicians in the age of streaming. Don Jazzy stated:
“We [Mavin] are moving from the traditional Friday release date to Wednesdays and Thursdays because there are no more Fridays [without another artistes dropping a song].
“If my artiste is to drop a song or project on a Friday and Wizkid or Asake is also releasing that day, I will move our release date because you don’t want to just die a natural death.”
Mavin Records has stars like Rema, Ayra Starr, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Johnny Drille, and Lifesize Teddy on its radar.
Don Jazzy previously explained why he always advises his signees to imitate the contentious persona of vocalist Portable.
When Don Jazzy advises his artists on how to remain relevant in the music business, he reportedly uses the Zazuu star as an example.
This was said by the music executive during an Afrobeats Intelligence Podcast conversation with Joey Akan.
Additionally, he conducted a comparative analysis of Portable and BNXN (previously Buju), both of whom rose to prominence in 2021.
Don Jazzy pointed out that although BNXN already had seven songs on the charts when Portable rose to fame with his breakthrough single, Zazuu Zeh, because to Olamide, the controversial singer’s fan base amassed a million more quickly.
He further explained that the controversial or debatable things that Portable does puts him in the news and that aids his relevance even without releasing songs.
