The Nollywood actor Olumide Oworu has openly discussed his reasons for choosing to run for office in the 2023 elections.
Oworu declared in February 2023 that he will run inside the Labour Party (LP) for the Lagos assembly’s Surulere Constituency 1 seat.
Following his name not appearing on the electoral body’s result sheet, his candidature became the focus of social media discussion.
After running under the All Progressive Congress (APC), actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot ultimately won the constituency seat.
Oworu voiced his displeasure with the current status of the nation on Nollywood On Radio, stating that numerous industries and sectors have been on a “downward spiral.”
The 30-year-old actor underlined the importance of group participation in national matters.
After making his acting debut in the drama series “Everyday People” at the age of six, Oworu stated that he aspires to be a part of Nigeria’s changemakers.
“We just need to be a part of our affairs. I want to live in Nigeria, I want to raise my family in a Nigeria that is good, that is a land of opportunities. I know how things were when I was growing up and it is just sad to see that we are just on a downward spiral,” he said.
“Almost nothing minus the entertainment industry, sports, and a few other industries have anything positive. Everything else just seems to be nosediving and I actually want to be a part of the people that are going to make some form of change in the society.”
Olumide gained fame for his role as Tari in ‘The Johnsons’, the African Magic television series.
He has featured in several movies and won awards for his craft.
