The US rapper Big Sean has disclosed his reason for not getting married to his eight-year girlfriend, Jhené Aiko.
The rapper claimed in an interview with the podcast “Out of Context” that relationships, including his own, have ups and downs and need constant work and navigating.
He said while marriage is generally considered as the sign of a successful relationship, the major focus should be on maintaining a strong bond rather than rushing into a partnership due to cultural pressure or fear.
“It is a little personal, you know what I mean? But just to be real with you, just like any people who have dealt with love, we’ve had our ups and downs, you know what I am saying? And I think it is still finding the right navigation through it all,” he said.
“Marriage symbolizes the best relationship, and having a relationship is first and foremost.
“I feel like a lot of people get the idea of like, ‘Oh, you have to get married,’ but then it is like, to me, that is almost a fear-based way of thinking, too. Because then people are getting divorced. The divorce rate is so f**king high.
“I feel I can only speak for myself that there needs to be more work done so we can keep going.”
The rapper added that his focus remains on building a strong foundation as a family with Jhené.
Sean and Jhené first got together in 2016, shortly after she divorced Polo da Genius, the producer.
