…with the set setting record of producing 29 First Class
The official Call to Bar ceremony of new Lawyers held yesterday. 4283 candidates’ were called to the Nigerian Bar, 29 of them made First Class honours, 211 made Second Class Upper Division, 1046 made Second Class Lower and 2997 made a Pass in the final Bar examination conducted earlier in the year.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen charged the 4283 new Lawyers to be honest with their clients when advising them on their chances of winning a case.
He congratulated and urged the new lawyers to imbibe the principles of integrity and diligence if they are to succeed as Lawyers. He also stated that the Body of Benchers has resolved to set out the modalities for a successful take-off of a mandatory pupillage and mentoring scheme.
In his words: ” I urge you to acquaint yourselves with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and all other relevant laws as far as administering justice is concerned”
“You are expected to be at the forefront in the campaign for justice, equity and fairness. Your level of proficiency is of immense significance to the efficiency of the Justice system in our country”
Earlier, the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Olarenwaju A. Onadeko commended the 29 students who graduated with First Class honours; while noting, the feat was rare as “it is the first time the school would produce 29 First Class honours students in a set. He also urged Law Faculties to adhere strictly to allocated student numbers in their admission carrying capacity as stipulated.
