The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), on Saturday urged Christians to adhere strictly to the COVID-19 protocols, as Christmas celebrations approach.
Mr Shina Ibiyemi, CAN Director of Legal and Public Affairs, Kwara State Chapter, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“As the country is facing the second wave of the disease, there is the need for the public to be cautious and protect themselves.
“Kwara CAN is encouraging all Christians and churches in the state to follow the COVID-19 protocols such as use of face masks and observe social distancing.
“Churches should ensure that they make use of infrared thermometer and have adequate ventilation for worshippers,” Ibiyemi said.
He noted that the Christian body had been sensitising churches to the fact that coronavirus is real and extremely dangerous.
“We call on the state governments to continue to sensitise market women and drivers, especially taxi drivers, tricycle and okada riders to observe COVID-19 protocols at all times with their passengers.
“Looking at all these groups, religious institutions, such as churches and mosques are the well organised in terms of ensuring COVID-19 protocols,” he said.
The CAN spokesperson however said the association would not condone another lockdown because the first one caused untold hardship on the people.
“We, however, appeal to the state government to step up preventive measures and implement laws to ensure that people adhered strictly to the safety protocols,” he said.
