Eid-el-fitr: Observe Zakat to assist needy, Islamic cleric urges Muslims
Imam Nurudeen Abdul-Kadiri, the Chief Imam of Alhaja Sideeqat Ahmad Megida Central Mosque, Ikorodu, has urged all the Muslims to endeavour to observe “Zakatul Fitri” to purify their mistakes during fasting and to assist the poor to celebrate on Salah Day.
Abdul-Kadiri made the plea during the Jumat prayer held in Ikorodu, Lagos on Friday.
According to him, Zakatul Fitri is compulsory for all Muslims, both male and female, except the less privileged.
“Zakatul Fitri is observed with the most common foods that are available in a particular community.
“Some scholars said that is not permissible for someone to use money for Zakatul fitri.
“It is permissible for people to observe Zakatul Fitri with dry foods such as rice, wheat, beans but not money.
“Giving money for Zakatul Fitri is not permissible and doing so will not enable the younger generation to emulate the practice of Prophet Muhammed,” Abdul-Kadiri said.
He said that the Zakatul fitri must be observed on the last day of Ramadan till the next morning before the Eid-el-fitr prayer.
The cleric said that Zakat could also be observed on money saved for a year that was up to N1.2 million.
He said zakat on N1.2 million is only 2.5 per cent, adding that zakat would eradicate poverty in the country if observed accordingly.
He said Muslims, especially women, could observe Zakat on their gold jewelries starting from 85 grammes of gold.
