FG urges UN to redeem $100b pledge
The Minister of Environment, Mohammad Abubakar has called on the United Nations (UN) to redeem its pledge of $100 billion made to support developing countries to attain their targets.
The Minister made the call during a visit by the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed to his office in Abuja, stating that Mohammad’s efforts in environmental sector in building formidable foundation are appreciated.
He said the government will seek more support through the UN in places such as the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) in Ogoni Cleanup projects, the United Nations Educational Social and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria Activities, UNCCD in the fight against desertification, the Great Green Wall (GGW), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in pollution control, environmental health and also climate action efforts.
Speaking, the Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations Amina Mohammed advised the government to ensure women, children and youths are always put at the centre of programmes as they need to be given adequate attention, adding that the environment sector is paramount in the UN agenda of 2030. The ministry according to her has done well in addressing some environmental issues.
