Hoodlums invade Uniuyo female hostel, steal money, others

Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers, on Wednesday, invaded the female hostel of the University of Uyo, Town campus, in Akwa Ibom State, and stole undisclosed amounts of money and other belongings, Punch online report.

The incident, which occurred in the W6 Hostel, came few days after some female students were attacked by unidentified persons in one of the hostels.

Southern City News gathered that the hoodlums went from room to room to dispossessing their hapless victims of their belongings.

A campus source, who pleaded not to be mentioned, told our correspondent in Uyo that though no life was lost during the operation, some of the students sustained minor injuries while trying to resist the invaders.

The source said, “Some hoodlums broke into the W6 Hostel at the University of Uyo, town campus around midnight when the students were sleeping.

“They stole property such as phones, laptops, jewellery and cash. No life was lost, but some of the affected students sustained minor injuries.

“We also learnt that some female students were attacked the previous day in one of the hostels.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, who confirmed the incident, said the Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed, had ordered the deployment of policemen in all the hostels.

According to him, the CP has held a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Eniefiok Essien, and the management with a view to finding a lasting solution to the frequent invasion of the hostels by armed robbers.

Macdon stated, “The command is aware of the incident that occurred at the University of Uyo, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered the deployment of officers to all the hostels on the campus.

“He has met with the vice-chancellor of the university and other management staff in an attempt to find lasting solutions to the problem.

“It is his desire that students go about their normal studies in a secure and peaceful atmosphere.”
