IGP summons commissioner over Plateau killings, redeploys another from Abuja

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris on Tuesday summoned the Commissioner of Police in Plateau, Undie Adie over incessant killings by herdsmen in the state.

The IG also approved the deployment of a new commissioner from Abuja.

Bala Ciroma is to assume duties immediately in the troubled state.

About 100 people were killed over the weekend in Plateau in violence linked to herdsmen.

Many Nigerians have condemned the security situation in the North-central state.

On Monday, the police and the air force announced the deployment of more personnel and aircraft to the state to prevent further violence.

The new police commissioner was announced on Tuesday.

Ciroma takes over from Undie Adie, who has been directed to report to the force headquarters in Abuja immediately.

Confirming the arrival of the new commissioner of police, the Plateau police spokesperson, Terna Tyopev, said handing over formalities by the two commissioners of police have taken place at the command’s headquarters in Jos.

“Today 26th June, 2018, a new commissioner of police CP Bala Cioma has assumed duty as the commissioner of police, Plateau state command,” he said.

Before his new assignment as commissioner of police in Plateau State, he was deputy commissioner of police, criminal investigation and intelligence department in Abuja.

Ciroma had also served as head of operations, Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.

He joined the Nigeria Police Force on March 3, 1999, with the rank of superintendent of police.

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected in Plateau on Tuesday to commiserate with the victims of the attacks.
