Insecurity: Gunmen kill community leader in Benue
A community leader in the Katsina Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, identified as Godwin Gbajur, popularly known as Tor Geri, was assassinated in the early hours of Saturday.
A source in the area said that the killers stormed the community leader’s and shot him dead in the presence of his family members.
The eyewitness said, “It was the gunshot at the residence of the community leader at the Government Reserve Area that woke some of us, but before one could rush outside, we sighted a motorcycle hurriedly leaving the scene.
“Immediately, we called the police and they took the corpse to the general hospital in town.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, in a statement, said the killers rode on two Bajaj motorcycles and invaded the residence of the deceased around 6.48am.
“At about 0648hrs, one Godwin Gbajur (Katsina-Ala Township Leader aka Tor Gari) was assassinated in his GRA residence at the outskirts of Katsina-Ala LGA by two armed bandits,” he said.”
According to the PPRO, preliminary investigation revealed that the assassins were gang members of the most wanted criminal in the state, Terwase Akwaza aka ‘Gana’.
He noted that eight empty shells of AK-47 ammunition were recovered at the scene, adding that efforts were ongoing to ensure that the bandits were arrested and brought to justice.
