Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai says former Military Head of State, Olusegun Obasanjo almost put an end to his military career 21 years ago.

He was then a major in the military when Obasanjo almost retired him.

Buratai, spoke while handling over to the new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru at the Army Headquarters.

Buratai said that his attainment of the rank of Lieutenant General and Chief of Army Staff were historic.

“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo almost retired me 21 years ago when I was a Major. My retirement after 40 years of Service is historic, hence, calls for gratitude,” he said.

Buratai did not reveal what he did that made Obasanjo wanting to retire him.

However, the retired amey general was grateful to Nigerian troops service at home and abroad, saying that the Army would not remain the same owing to his transformational leadership and landmark achievements.

According to him, the Nigerian Army had been better positioned with intelligence gathering techniques and equipment, insisting that the security situation across the country was largely stabilised under his watch.
