By Adeoluwa Bravo
The chief Press Secretary to Ogun State Governor, Mr. Kunle Somorin, has clarified that contrary to reports and headlines that Governor Abiodun donates patrol vehicles and motorcycles to Nigerian Police, the security tools are Ogun State security assets and not a personal donation from the governor.
Mr. Somorin in an exclusive interview with newsclickng correspondent on Saturday, also made it clear that the patrol vehicles and motorcycles are not only for the use of Nigerian Police Force, but for other sister security agencies such as Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC, Nigeria Customs Service NCS, Nigeria Immigration Service NIS, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, and Ogun State Community and Social Orientation Safety Corps – So Safe Corps.
Earlier on Friday, the Ogun State Government had launched one hundred patrol vehicles and two-hundred motorcycles to combat insecurity in the state. This was done in the presence of the Nigerian Police Chief, IGP Muhammed Adamu and other security heads at the governor’s Arcade Ground, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, marking the 100 days of Governor Abiodun in office.
Further in his comments, Mr. Somorin affirmed that the procurement of patrol vehicles and motorcycles is in execution of Ogun State Security Trust Fund launched in late August. The security assets according to the CPS remain the assets of the Ogun State and not for the Nigerian Police or other security agencies.
Through this, the Ogun government is renewing its pledge to ensure a safe environment and attract investors; though, it is not yet clear whether the government will be responsible for the maintenance of the operational vehicles and motorcycles or the security agencies will shoulder the maintenance.
