Police arrest 20 suspects over Ondo cult clash

The Ondo State Police Command said on Friday that it had arrested no fewer than 20 persons in connection with the cult clash that occurred in Owo, the headquarters of Owo Local Government Area of the state.

No fewer than six persons reportedly lost their lives in the clash that involved some cultists and members of the Oodua Peoples Congress in the ancient town a few days ago.

Also, four persons were reportedly killed in a clash between some groups of youths in Ikare Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko North East Local Government Area of the state, over a chieftaincy matter.

To this end, the state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu warned all the traditional rulers in the state against allowing clashes of members of cult groups in their domains.

Speaking on Friday in Akure the state capital, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Bolaji Salami, disclosed that the 20 suspected cultists were arrested in Owo, Akungba Akoko and Ikare Akoko.

According to the Commissioner, security had been beefed up in Owo community and its environs to avoid a further clash.

He said, ” We have arrested 20 persons in Owo and we have visited the chiefs fighting over the Olokoja chieftaincy title (in Ikare Akoko), urging them to sheath sword.”

The Commissioner stated that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as courts open for business.
