The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) are partnering on proactive measures to address the challenges of basic education in the country.

Mr Ossom Ossom, Head of Public Relations and Protocol Unit of the commission made disclosure in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

The statement quoted the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, who spoke at a five-day training exercise held in Calabar, as saying that equitable quality in the provision of basic education was of paramount importance.

Bobboyi, who was represented by Mr Edwin Jarumai, UBEC Director of Administration and Supplies, added that ensuring effective utilisation of available learning opportunities at the basic level necessitated collaborations with UNICEF.

He said that UNICEF was providing an opportunity for Social Mobilization Officers and School Based Management Committee (SBMC) Desk Officers from UBEC and State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) respectively, to sharpen their skills towards effective service delivery.

Bobboyi said: “The concept of Social Mobilization and SBMC in UBE delivery are central to efforts aimed at institutionalising community ownership of the structure and processes for UBE delivery in their domains.

” UNICEF is UBEC’s major partners in the SBMC intervention in Nigeria.

” It is expected that the lessons learnt at the training and its communique would provide further direction and added value to mechanisms put in place by UBEC, SUBEBs, UNICEF and other UBE stakeholders in broadening the partnership for UBE delivery at all levels”.
