The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, has said that officers caught engaging in gambling while on duty would face disciplinary actions that could lead to demotion or outright dismissal.
In a statement issued by Chike Oti, the Lagos police spokesperson, on Tuesday, the police chief encouraged members of the public to always expose, albeit accurately, indisciplined and unprofessional policemen.
The warning came as two police officers were caught engaging in gambling while on duty.
The unnamed officers are currently facing disciplinary action that could lead to a reduction in rank or dismissal, the police statement said.
Oti said the attention of the police was drawn to a video on social media where the two officers were captured counting coupons which the eyewitness mistook for bribe collected from motorists.
The video, posted on Instablog, was captioned ‘Policemen stationed near Zenith Bank, Opebi, Lagos, seen counting bribes received and smoking’.
But the police said a preliminary investigation revealed that the officers were not counting money but gambling coupons popularly known as Baba Ijebu.
According to Oti, the police commissioner ordered for their arrest, detention and trial.
“The men are currently facing disciplinary action that could lead to reduction in rank or dismissal,” the police spokesperson said.
“It is wrong to engage in such distracting activity while on duty.”
