The government of Abia State has reported three suspected cases of measles in the Arochukwu and Umunneochi Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

On Tuesday, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, the Commissioner for Health, revealed during a press briefing in Umuahia on the outcomes of the State Executive Council meeting that efforts were underway to control the outbreak of measles and prevent its further transmission.

“We assume the quantum of the infection to be an outbreak, hence our proactive measures to control the situation.

“We are currently mopping up to identify those children and ascertain when the condition started and the severity of the scourge,” she said.

The commissioner attributed the infection to the dry weather conditions being experienced in the state and advised that children who are more vulnerable be vaccinated against such diseases.

“We had our campaign on preventive measures against the disease, and thousands of children were vaccinated at the beginning of December 2023.

“If some children were not vaccinated, they could be the source of the outbreak.

“We are doing everything to contain and prevent further spread of the disease; as I speak, it is under control,” she said.

Furthermore, Mr. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, urged parents to ensure their children receive vaccination against the disease.

Kanu also appealed to the state’s residents to stay vigilant and adopt a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of infection.

“The government is working round the clock to ensure that it does not spread outside those two LGA’s,” Kanu said.

He mentioned that the renovation projects at Umunneato and Okpuala Ngwa General Hospitals were in the final stages and would soon be operational.

Furthermore, he announced plans for a medical outreach in the state scheduled for April 2024, offering free treatment for various ailments. The outreach aims to extend its services to remote rural areas for broader and more effective coverage.

He specified a target of 5000 residents, with 200 individuals expected to benefit from complimentary surgeries during the program.
