The Ebonyi State Government has confirmed three additional deaths due to a cholera outbreak that recently claimed the lives of 10 people in Ndibokote village, Ezza Inyimagu, in the Izzi Local Government Area.
During a press briefing on Saturday in Abakaliki, the state’s Health Commissioner, Dr. Moses Ekuma, announced that 69 cases have been confirmed across the state.
Providing an update, Ekuma mentioned that individuals affected by the outbreak are receiving treatment at various centers established in the impacted communities within Ebonyi and Izzi Local Government Areas.
“We have 69 confirmed cases and 13 deaths from the cholera outbreak, with most fatalities occurring in Ndibokote village of Ezza Inyimagu and Ndiogbaga Obashi community in Izzi Local Government Area,” Ekuma said.
He highlighted the prompt response of the state government, with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s approval to procure medical supplies, as a key measure in controlling the outbreak.
“The Ministry of Health’s rapid response team was immediately deployed to the affected communities to contain the situation, so there is no need for Ebonyi residents to panic. Currently, patients undergoing treatment are showing positive progress, and no new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours,” Ekuma added.
The commissioner advised residents to report any suspected cases to the Ministry’s Health Center for Disease Control or certified local health facilities, and encouraged the community to adhere to preventive measures.
