The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Zamfara State has been plunged into crisis as two factional chairmen emerged from its 2024 election of state officers.
The immediate past vice chairman, Ibrahim Jibril, was declared the winner of the chairmanship position by the returning officer, Mannir Bature, having received 183 votes.
He defeated his closest rival, Usman Suleiman, who garnered twelve votes. Jibril is asserting his position as the new chairman of NMA Zamfara State.
The Zamfara State Branch of the NMA commenced its annual general meeting peacefully with a scientific conference. However, disagreements arose when the election of new state officials began after the tenure of the outgoing officials, led by Sanusi Bello, ended.
The returning officer for the election, who also serves as the National Publicity Secretary of the NMA, Mannir Bature, adjourned the session to 5 pm for virtual participation by delegates.
He stated that they reconvened at 5 pm, conducted the election, and while most candidates ran unopposed, three candidates— Ibrahim Jibril, Mohammed Abubakar, and Usman Suleiman—contested the chairmanship.
Ibrahim Jibril emerged victorious with 183 votes.
The newly elected chairman, whom the national publicity secretary of the NMA described as legitimate, promised an open-door policy, transparency, and accountable leadership, pledging to involve every member as he leads the association in the state.
Usman Suleiman, also claiming the chairmanship, received support from some association elders, urging members to back him and his team to elevate the association.
Channels Television’s investigation revealed that the national leadership of the NMA had recognized Jibril’s leadership. However, Suleiman attempted to assert his claim at the state secretariat but was denied access.
