5 Ways to help your child enjoy screen-free weekend

Phones, tablets, televisions and video games can easily become part of a child’s weekend routine. While children can enjoy these devices, spending the entire weekend in front of a screen can leave little time for other activities.

A screen-free weekend does not have to feel like a punishment. With the right activities and a little planning, parents can help children enjoy their time without constantly asking for a phone or tablet.

Here are five ways to help your child enjoy a screen-free weekend:

1. Plan fun activities together

Children are more likely to stay away from screens when they have something interesting to do. Plan simple activities such as drawing, colouring, baking, reading or playing board games.

Allow your child to choose some of the activities. Giving them a say can make the experience more enjoyable.

2. Spend time outdoors

Take your child outside for some fresh air and physical activity. You could visit a nearby park, take a walk, play football or simply spend time together outdoors.

If going out is not possible, simple activities such as playing in the compound or helping with gardening can also keep children active.

3. Let them help around the house

Household activities can become a learning experience for children. Depending on their age, they can help arrange their room, fold clothes, wash simple items or assist with preparing a meal.

Make the activity enjoyable rather than treating it only as a chore.

4. Create family game time

Bring the family together for games that everyone can enjoy. Card games, puzzles, board games and simple guessing games can keep children entertained while encouraging interaction.

These activities also give parents an opportunity to talk, laugh and bond with their children.

5. Give them time to be creative

Children do not always need organised activities to have fun. Give them materials such as paper, crayons, building blocks or safe craft supplies and allow them to create something of their own.

You can also encourage them to make up stories, build things or put on a small performance for the family.

A screen-free weekend does not mean children have to be bored. With simple activities, family time and opportunities to explore their creativity, parents can help children discover enjoyable ways to spend their weekends away from screens.
