The Seiyefas: Meet Bayelsa couple who talked their way to friendship, love and forever life journey during a boat ride

13

About 10 years ago when Mr and Mrs Seiyefa left their homes on different journeys to a Bayelsa community little did they know that their parts may somehow cross for a love destination.

While a number of passengers have accidentally met through the different means of transportation including airplanes, trains and vehicles, however, this particular journey on water appears to be divinely orchestrated. While Mrs Seiyefa was traveling with her cousin, she had a sweet boat experience with her closest passenger on the journey who would later turn out as her husband.

The lovebirds did well to exchange contacts and maintain communication after the ride to their respective destinations. In no time, the feelings grew beyond mere communication to that of genuine attraction for each other.

It’s been 10 years of meeting each other on that boat ride and eight years of walking the journey of love and life together.

Please come along with me on this important episode of my spotlighted couple who began their love journey on water.

1. Can you take us back to how your love story started?

Mr Seiyefa: We met during a boat ride in Bayelsa. I was going for a community event, and she was also travelling to the same place with her cousin. We sat close to each other.

Mrs Seiyefa: The journey was longer than expected because the water was rough that day. We started talking just to pass time. We talked about our families, work and life in general.

Mr Seiyefa: By the time we arrived, I realised I enjoyed our conversation and wanted to know her better.

2. What was the moment you knew “this is the one”?

Mr Seiyefa: I love how respectful she is. That somehow made me get closer to her. She was respectful to everyone, whether they could do anything for her or not. She still is.

Mrs Seiyefa: His focus level. He had dreams and worked hard for them, but he was also humble. That balance attracted me to him.

3. How many years have you been together?

Mr Seiyefa: We have been together for 10 years.

Mrs Seiyefa: We have been married for 8 years.

4. What has been your secret to keeping the spark alive all these years, especially after the arrival of kids?

Mr Seiyefa: We don’t allow life to make us strangers. We still talk about our day, laugh together and make time for each other.

Mrs Seiyefa: We also understand that marriage has different seasons. Some days are easy, some days are not, but we keep choosing each other.

5. How do you both make each other feel special, even in small ways? What fun habits have stayed with you throughout your marriage?

Mr Seiyefa: One funny habit we have is arguing about who misses the other person more whenever we travel separately. I love it when she do that … It makes me feel so loved.

Mrs Seiyefa: He likes bringing home little things from his trips. It may just be a snack or something small, but I know he saw it and thought about me.

6. How do you handle disagreements or tough moments now, compared to your early years?

Mr Seiyefa: When we were younger, we wanted to explain ourselves immediately.

Mrs Seiyefa: Now we have learned to listen first. Especially when I noticed that most times he is not looking for an argument, he just want to be understood.

7. What’s one thing your partner still does that melts your heart?

Mr Seiyefa: She welcomes me home with so much warmth. No matter how stressful my day is, being around her gives me peace.

Mrs Seiyefa: He makes me feel like we are a team. Whenever something concerns the family, he doesn’t carry it alone.

8. What was one of the biggest challenges you faced together, and how did you overcome it?

Mr Seiyefa: One challenge we faced was adjusting to the responsibilities that came after marriage and having children.

9. What advice would you give to younger couples hoping for a lasting marriage?

Mr Seiyefa: Don’t marry only because of feelings. Feelings change, but character and commitment will keep you together.

Mrs Seiyefa: Be kind to each other. The way you treat your partner during difficult moments matters a lot.

10. If you could sum up your marriage in one word or sentence, what would it be?

Mr Seiyefa: Peace.

Mrs Seiyefa: A beautiful journey of two people who found friendship, love and home in each other.
