10 dead as car crash in Enugu

At least 10 people have died in a horrifying car accident on the Enugu-Onitsha Highway in Enugu State.

According to reports, the accident in Enugu occurred at 9 am close to the CBN Bus Stop.

Cement trailer truck and an 18-seater bus with the Enugu registration number XL884 ENU collided.

Eyewitnesses claimed that 10 people died, despite the fact that the fatality count it was unable to be independently verified as at the time of this report.

The two vehicles were reportedly traveling in a single lane due to potholes that had littered the opposite lane of the road, according to an eyewitness.

Ifeanyi Ejike, one of the eyewitnesses, claimed that the bus was carrying commuters from Abakpa in the Enugu East Local Government Area and was traveling to the town of New Market when the tragedy happened.

“The driver whose name we have learnt is Simeon was coming from Abakpa and made attempt to overtake another vehicle in his front that was emitting too much smoke from it’s exhausts

“As he made an attempt to overtake the vehicle, the trailer was very close and the next thing we heard was a loud sound and the bus was completely damaged. I don’t know how many survived but I counted eight dead bodies on the floor,” he said.

Others blamed the road’s poor condition, which prompted many drivers to drive one-way, for the preventable tragedy.

Soldiers from the Nigerian Army, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigerian Police were present to monitor traffic and prevent any lawlessness.

In the meantime, injured and deceased remains have been transported quickly to ESUT-Parklane, the teaching hospital of Enugu State University.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, was unavailable to speak with about the incident.

At the time this report was submitted, he hadn’t replied to a text message.
