A 12-year-old girl named Nabilat died on Saturday after accidentally falling into a well in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State. She lived on Busari Alao Street in the Ikoyi Community of the Irewolede area, and personnel of the Kwara State Fire Service eventually pulled her out of the surface well, but she was already dead.
A credible source reported that the incident happened around 10:35 a.m. while she was fetching water for household chores. The source added that a neighbour called Mayowa alerted the fire service, but the rescue team arrived after she had already passed away.
In a statement, the Fire Service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed that Mr. Mayowa contacted the brigade and that officers recovered the body from the well and handed it over to a relative.
“According to the report, the girl went to fetch water and, during the process, one of her legs suddenly slipped, causing her to fall into the well,” Adekunle said.
The Director of the Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed sadness over the incident and urged the public to exercise greater caution in daily activities. He advised families to refrain from sending underage children on dangerous errands.
