The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday revealed his intention to contest for President of Nigeria in 2023 saying he will not reject or turn his back on Nigerians clamouring for him to contest the election.

Tinubu stated this on Tuesday in Abuja after a closed-door meeting with members of the Northern Alliance Committee, who were on a solidarity visit.

The former governor according to reports was working on a consensus arrangement to help him emerge as sole candidate on the platform of the APC.

His posters have been conspicuous lately while bags of rice and beans with his pictures indicating his intention to contest the 2023 presidential election have been distributed as well.

Speaking in that direction, Tinubu said he was still in consultations with political stakeholders and will make known his intention soon.

Responding to a question on whether or not he will heed the clamour of Nigerians to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari, Tinubu said, “I’m not going to turn them (Nigerians) down, but I will still consult widely, particularly brainstorm with my friends and find a date to come out openly and tell Nigerians.”

The former Lagos State governor pointed out that President Buhari needs support of all Nigerians to ensure that he is not distracted from attending to all the current challenges facing the country now.

“The president is still in office,” he said, adding that, “I don’t want to distract him from all the challenges that he might face today. So we will consult and make our programme known to the people later and the intention is clear. So you keep guessing.”

Endorsing Tinubu for 2023, the leader of the Northern Alliance Committee, Mr Lawal Ahmed Munir, said the meeting resolved to work for the actualisation of the ambition of the APC National Leader.

Munir who said they had a fruitful deliberation with Asiwaju disclosed that the committee resolved to support him come 2023 due to Asiwaju’s stirling political qualities.

According to Munir, “The meeting ended very well. We are working for him. We are working for him because we know he will win the election when the time comes.”
