The senator representing Kano Central, Ibrahim Shekarau, on Wednesday formally defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Shekarau had, on August 29, defected along with his supporters to the PDP, over alleged unfair treatment by the NNPP’s leadership.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan read the letter announcing Shekarau’s official defection.

In the letter, the former Kano State governor said his defection and that of his supporters in Kano was to actualise their political aspirations in a party that accommodates them.

After the announcement, PDP senators, led by Minority Leader Philip Aduda and Minority Whip Chukwuka Utazi, embraced Shakarau as a gesture of welcoming him into the party.
