Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has urged residents to shun violence and other acts capable of threatening the peace and stability of the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Yusuf made the appeal on Thursday in his address at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium during celebrations marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The governor called on residents to uphold peace, unity and mutual respect, saying a stable environment was necessary for the state’s economic growth and development.

“As the 2027 General Election is fast approaching, I also appeal to you all to continue to uphold peace, unity, and mutual respect. Let us shun violence and anything that may threaten the peace and stability of our dear state,” he said.

Yusuf also urged Nigerians to pray for peaceful, free, fair and credible elections in 2027.

“I must also seize this opportunity to appreciate all our security agencies for their tireless efforts in maintaining peace and protecting the lives and property of our people at all times.

“I urge our people to reject violence, division, intolerance and criminality, and to embrace peace, lawful enterprise and responsible citizenship,” he added.

The governor said his administration remained committed to consolidating its achievements in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, water supply, security and human capital development.

“Our administration remains committed to consolidating the gains we have made in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, water supply, security and human capital development,” Yusuf said.

He added that the state government would continue working with the Federal Government, local governments, traditional and religious institutions, the private sector and development partners.

On security, Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with security agencies operating in the state and providing additional logistical and operational support, particularly to the military, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Services.

He said the government had also sustained grassroots security coordination in several local government areas, including Tsanyawa, Ghari, Gwarzo, Shanono, Bagwai, Rogo, Kiru/Bebeji, Karaye and Tudun Wada/Doguwa.

According to the governor, the measures are aimed at protecting lives, restoring public confidence and enabling residents in affected communities to return to their farms and normal economic activities.

Yusuf also highlighted measures taken to address drug abuse and illicit trafficking, including the establishment of the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and an executive order aimed at strengthening the fight against illicit substances, thuggery and related criminal activities.

He said the state government had provided start-up capital, livestock, skills and other forms of support to thousands of beneficiaries across the state as part of efforts to assist vulnerable families.

The governor also appreciated the Federal Government for its support for critical infrastructure, security and other development initiatives in Kano State.

“As we mark this 66th Independence Anniversary, let us renew our faith in Nigeria, uphold peace and unity, and contribute our share towards building a stronger, more prosperous and peaceful nation,” he said.
