Barely two days after resigning from the All Progressives Congress, a former governorship aspirant in Plateau State, Brigadier General John Sura (retd), has finalized plans to join the African Democratic Congress, where he intends to seek the 2027 governorship ticket.

Sura, from Panyam Ward in Mangu Local Government Area the same council as Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang had only joined the APC a year ago after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party.

In a resignation letter dated March 21, 2026, addressed to the APC chairman in Panyam Ward, the retired general declared that his exit from the APC takes immediate effect. He also expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the support and privilege extended to him during his brief membership.

Speaking with journalists in Jos on Tuesday, Sura cited leadership failure as his reason for leaving the APC, emphasizing that Plateau State urgently requires a regime change in 2027 to address persistent insecurity and improve the state’s economic position.

He said, “The APC-led administration has done little to address the security challenges confronting the state. The governor has a responsibility in this regard, just as the federal government does.”

Sura added that his move is not solely about contesting the governorship but also about “changing the psyche of the average Plateau citizen and, by extension, that of the nation.”

“In a few days, I will come up with multiple reasons for my resignation from the APC. However, my main purpose is to leave an impactful legacy for our generation. I have the interest, and by the grace of God, I believe I will contest it.

“At the moment, it is quite unfortunate that no one is contesting against Mutfwang on the platform of the APC, and this is a dangerous situation. I want to carry the people’s empathy and the passion to serve. I will definitely throw my hat into the ring,” he declared.

The retired general dismissed the notion that the recent wave of defections into the APC nationwide would automatically secure victory for the party in 2027. He maintained that it is the electorate, not individual politicians, who will ultimately decide the outcome.
