The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the death of 22 soldiers and over 70 insurgents in an ongoing military operation targeting the Timbuktu Triangle, a notorious terrorist enclave in Borno State.

The operation, led by troops of Operation Hadin Kai since  January 16, 2025, aims to dismantle terrorist strongholds in the region.

Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, announced on Sunday that three key insurgent commanders, including Talha, Mallam Umar, and Abu Yazeed, were among those neutralised.

Despite facing threats from IEDs, suicide bombers, and drones, the troops demonstrated tactical superiority, repelling multiple attacks.

Acknowledging the loss of soldiers, Buba urged the media to withhold publishing their names until families are formally notified.
