The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has stated that 95 million Nigerians must register for the National Identification Number (NIN).
Kayode Adegoke, the Commission’s Head of Corporate Communications, announced this on X over the weekend.
According to him, in order for NIMC to fulfil the 200 million target by 2025, 95 million Nigerians must register for the NIN.
According to data from the National Population Commission (NPC), Nigeria’s population in 2023 was 223,804,632, up 2.41 percent from 2022. The commission also estimates that the population in 2022 will be 218,541,212, a 2.41 percent rise from 2021.
“As of now, more over 105 million NIN have been issued to Nigerians and legal residents. We want to reassure Nigerians that we will achieve our goal of enrolling all Nigerians within the next year or two.”
To meet its aim of 200 million enrollments by 2025, an additional 95 million Nigerians must register.
The NIN, a unique identification granted to each citizen, has emerged in recent years as the foundation of a number of government projects aiming at improving security, governance, and service delivery.
The NIMC representative stated that the commission remains committed to attaining universal enrollment in the NIN system by 2025.
Adegoke stated that upon Abisoye Coker’s appointment as MIMC’s director-general, she realised the need to streamline the modification and enrollment procedures.
He also stated that a self-service platform was created, allowing Nigerians both locally and abroad to make necessary changes such as changing names, dates of birth, email addresses, and phone numbers from the comfort of their own homes or offices, using a variety of devices, including iOS and Android-based devices.
Adegoke underlined the simplicity of the self-service modification portal and encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of this unique option.
He emphasised the progress of the procedure, stating that in the past, applicants had to visit NIMC offices for data updates.
