The management of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, at the weekend, sasserted its unwavering stance against violent conduct and protests by the Student Union Government (SUG) of the university, leading to the dissolution of the union.
The university’s administration stated that it could not simply ignore these instances of lawlessness persisting within the campus. This decision follows a disorderly protest concerning purported school fee hikes.
The statement released by Mike Ade Aladenika, Head of Corporate Communications and Protocol, on behalf of the university management, said: “It should also be noted that the Senate had directed that under no circumstances should the university gates be shut in the name of protests. They still dared the Senate and went ahead to lock up the gates.”
The statement outlined a range of activities conducted by the protesters, under the leadership of the former SUG executives, which included but were not limited to: “holding students who wanted to obey Senate’s directive hostage and openly beating up some of them; violently attacking and causing injuries to persons who wanted to access their place of worship on campus.”
He emphasized that the university has established regulations that govern student conduct, underlining that any violation of the matriculation oath carries its designated penalties and repercussions.
